PRIVATE RESIDENCE - 1999 Distinction Award
The side yard of this home has a shared use between family, friends, and the families dog “Duffy”. The design had to address the use of a barbecue pit and an area for small social gatherings. Because of the dog, adequate turf area had to allotted. Views from the kitchen were important, and the connection between interior and exterior space were very strong.

The patio area was increased to provide larger entertaining, eating, and cooking spaces. The retaining wall helps to catch the neighbor’s runoff and allows more seating space. The steps and raised patio area act as a focal from within the kitchen. The perennials planted in the cracks of the steps and patio add interest and help to complete the focal

PRIVATE RESIDENCE - 2001 First Place Award
After the family remodeled their home, the new den and garage cut the yard down to 1/3 of its original size. After months of construction, it was time to focus on landscaping the back yard. The clients’ desire to create an oasis after work was the basis for the new landscape plan.

The new design created small distinct gathering areas for family barbeques, reading, and relaxing. By removing the existing sidewalk, the depth of the yard expanded and the pecan tree roots were further protected. The design intent was to create visual appeal on the ground, to draw focus to the clients yard from their second floor master suite, rather than to the view of adjacent properties.

PRIVATE RESIDENCE - 2002 Bronze Award
Often, landscape renovation work involves working in small spaces. This project was no exception. The challenge was to create a courtyard that the owner views from their office/study a minimum of 12 hours a day. The concept was to give the effect of water, and to use the water to tie together two separate courtyards.

To bring the effect of water into the second courtyard without having a water feature, our plan incorporates those things you would associate with or find near water. Boulders, pebbles, and lush plantings create the idea of water or a yard with a river running through it. Plantings are brought to the boulders, and particular plants were chosen for their lushness and texture to simulate a river ban.
